Learning Through Play

At Montague Road we place a strong emphasis on learning through play.  When children are happy and enjoying themselves, the learning naturally follows with lots of encouragement from our staff.  All of our resources are carefully selected to ensure that your child has a wide variety of choice and that we cover all areas of learning and development.

We cover all areas of learning as identified in the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage). There are 7 areas of learning and development, and within these, there are 3 Prime Areas:

The three prime areas are:

  • Communication and Language – we provide opportunities to experience a rich language environment, to develop children’s confidence and skills in expressing themselves and to speak and listen in a range of situations.  Our love of books and singing within the setting builds upon the communication skills they develop at home.

  • Physical Development – young children need to be active and interactive, to develop their co-ordination, control and movement. We help children to understand the importance of physical activity and to make healthy choices in relation to food. Whether indoors or outdoors we encourage the children’s fine and gross motor skills in a variety of ways.

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development – we help children to develop a positive sense of themselves and others. To form positive relationships, and develop respect for others. We encourage them to develop social skills, to learn how to manage their feelings, to understand how to behave appropriately in groups and to have confidence in their own abilities.

We also support children in 4 ‘Specific Areas’, through which the 3 Prime Areas are strengthened and applied. The Specific Areas are:

  • Literacy - we encourage children to link sounds and letters and to begin to read and write.  We give children access to a wide range of reading materials to ignite their interest.

  • Mathematics - we provide children with opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers. Calculating simple addition and subtraction problems and to describe shapes, spaces and measures.

  •  Understanding the World – we discuss with the children the world around them, both their local community and further afield. We initiate opportunities to explore, observe and find out about people, places, technology and the environment.

  • Expressive Arts and Design – we allow children to explore and play with a wide range of materials and media. We provide opportunities and encouragement for sharing their thoughts, ideas and feelings through a variety of activities in art, music, movement, dance, role-play and design and technology.

We have a huge range of resources which we vary throughout the year, but if a child wishes to play with something specific, we will arrange that for them.

Evidence of children’s learning will be sent to you regularly with photographs, and written observations by your child’s key worker.  You have the opportunity to discuss your child’s development at any stage throughout their time with us and also at the parents meetings in February.
